Leadership

Score 2.4/5

  • Head of School: Thomas Hagerman 2022-current.
  • Previously Hagerman was the Superintendent of Scarsdale Schools in New York (resigned 2022).
  • Hagerman’s departure followed the Scarsdale School Board’s discovery that the district, under Hagerman’s leadership, covered up the imposition of $1.7 million dollars in IRS fines for tax errors in payroll withholding.
  • At the time of his resignation from Scarsdale Schools Hagerman was the second highest-paid school Superintendent in the State of New York with a compensation package of $476,000 annually.
  • His appointment as Head of School at The Latin School was announced in January 2022, before the findings of the New York State investigation were made public.
  • Hagerman’s current compensation is unknown, however a 2022 tax return filed by The Latin School shows his predecessor’s salary at $734,542 annually plus a yearly bonus of $61,692.

Lawsuits & Controversies

Score 1.6/5

  • As of January 2024 The Latin School is currently facing a $100 million wrongful death lawsuit filed by a former family whose son took his own life in January of 2022. The lawsuit alleges that the student was subjected to repeated harassment and cyberbullying by classmates and that the school’s handling of the situation was inadequate resulting in his death. Both the student and the student’s parents alerted the school of ongoing issues and the lawsuit alleges that school did not take steps to address and/or discipline the students implicated in the bullying and did not contact their guardians. Additionally, the affected student’s parents were not notified of a meeting the student had with the Dean of Students wherein he detailed the harassment he was experiencing until after he had taken his own life.
  • Former students of The Latin School have gone on record reporting that the school turns a blind eye to racism and xenophobia. There is an instagram account, Latin Survivors, which was created in 2020 by a Latin graduate. It allowed for students, former and current, to share their experiences at the school. It is no longer actively accepting submissions but remains live and can be viewed. Following the creation of the Instagram page the administration released a statement that they were aware of racial issues at the school.

School Culture

Score 1.6/5

  • The Latin School’s stated goal is to “put students at the heart of everything we do. We're committed to seeing everyone within these walls succeed and reach their full potential through an educational experience that will empower them to tinker, to make mistakes, to ask questions, and to change how they see the world around them.” However, many former parents and students have claimed that the school has an issue with permissive attitudes around bullying, racism and xenophobia.

If you have received financial aid from Latin, please be aware that the aid package we received turned out to be a sham. Although we received a generous aid package during our first year, our financial obligation increased significantly every year, and we ended up paying almost the entire tuition fee for multiple children. While Latin claims to consider the entire family's finances, and we also expected some increase due to our rising income, the decision to increase our financial obligation this much did not make sense at all. This eventually forced us to withdraw our children from the school, even though they still wanted to attend. It was an extremely painful experience for our entire family, and we are not sure if there have been any policy changes over time or if we were singled out and treated unfairly.

When you're inside the Latin School of Chicago, you'll feel like you're in a special place, and maybe you'll find a way for yourself there as a student or teacher. There are times you will enjoy the experience. When it's all over, though, you will look back and realize that the Latin School of Chicago hollowed you out and filled you up with something dense and immovable, something that weighed you down so you could never move the way you wanted to. You'll realize you are not the same as you used to be, and not in a good way.

I am an alum who attended middle school and high school. The overall quality of my education was solid and I was prepared academically for both college and grad school. I was destroyed there emotionally though. The teachers and administrators will cut you down and chip away at your self esteem at every opportunity and the students (esp the lifers) are ruthless (even to a “popular” child such as myself). There are issues with drugs, racism, anti semitism and classism. The people who buy their incredible prestige PR should look deeper at their own motivation for choosing this school and think twice before subjecting their child to such abuse...there are far better options if you have or want an educated, kind and happy child.

A school should inspire curiosity & thirst for learning. Latin has turned into an institution that tells students what to think, not how to think. It’s wrong to hear students say they know when to "keep their mouths shut" because of teachers' differing views. Biased teaching is not preparing students for the real world, rather it strips them of freedom of thought, weakening their real world perspective. The administration, including Head of School continues to ignore bullying that exists across all divisions within the student, faculty & parent bodies. I feel my children are targeted for who they are and do not feel they are fully safe. Members of the community feel they can't truly be themselves without being unfairly treated. This is only underscored by allowing biased organizations to script curriculum. If you are looking at Latin, seriously consider another as this school's academic legacy appears to be slipping quickly.

I came to Latin after I graduated 8th grade for high school. I came during covid into a new foreign environment with only one friend from my middle school joining me. My middle school was extremely diverse, so moving into this new environment was definitely hard. I did not make that many meaningful connections until my Sophomore year because everything was online and virtual my Freshman year. I connected with people through sports such as Basketball and Baseball. Also using clubs and affinity groups to adapt helped as well. Sophomore was my first time being back in a class environment in two years at that point. I made friends extremely quickly and had a blast. The classes I took significantly added to my experience and I have enjoyed them so much. My Junior and first semester of Senior year were filled with a lot of college preparation as the difficulty of the classes only became higher. All in all, I have loved every moment of my experience at Latin. I would change nothing.

The people and staff at Latin school are wonderful, there are a variety of classes to choose from and so many opportunities to explore topics or interests on your own through clubs or independent studies.

FAQs

Find answers to frequently asked questions to help you navigate our site and understand our school ratings.

How do I search?

You can use our search feature to locate a specific school by name. You can also search by location to view our ranked list of schools in that particular area. By searching in this way you will view the schools in descending rank from best to worst.

How are schools rated?

Socratic’s rating system has two parts: an overall rating out of 5 and individual category ratings out of 10. Using a 1-10 scale for individual categories allows for more nuance and flexibility in rating and makes the 5 star rating a more complete rating. Once individual category ratings are determined the school receives a score out of a possible 50 points which is then divided by 10 to determine their overall rating.

These individual categories and their criteria are as follows:

Financial Health: Socratic assigns a rating based on the financial information in a school’s tax returns. A tax return clearly illustrates the school’s reliance upon fundraising and donors, their involvement with outside businesses via investing, as well as their fiscal responsibility. Socratic believes this information is closely linked to how a school operates culturally as well as how decisions are made that can effect students’ and parents’ experiences at the school. We look at this information because it can help answer the question: Who does the school value?

Leadership: This rating is based upon the current head of the school’s length of tenure and number of years overall in a leadership position in education. Additionally complaints, investigations and/or lawsuits involving either the school or leader themselves both at their current school as well as at former schools while they were in charge are taken into consideration.

Lawsuits and Complaints: When determining this rating Socratic uses court records searches and news sources to determine if there have been any lawsuits and/or complaints brought against the school or its leadership.

School Culture: Socratic bases this rating upon whether the stated culture/mission statement of the school is adhered to. This is determined by referring to the lawsuits and complaints section as well as all available journalism referencing the perceptions of the school and whether these align with how the school presents itself.

Acceptance Rates at Top Colleges: College acceptance information is reported and available on most school websites. Socratic takes the number of Ivy League Acceptances and the size of the senior graduating class and determines the percentage of Ivy acceptance to determine this rating. . When unreported or in the case of elementary and middle school education this is not taken into consideration when rating the school.

How is Socratic better?

Socratic uses a synthesis of pure data to determine ratings for each school. Our ratings are not crowd-sourced so cannot be review-bombed or gamified to manipulate results. Although you can view user-submitted comments and reviews of schools we do not use this information to determine our rating or the rank of the school.

How can I trust the ratings?

Because our ratings are data-driven and carefully determined using bias-free research we believe they are more reliable than sites where ratings are determined by reviews of interested parties. Face it, no one bothers to review something unless they feel very strongly about it. These types of ratings are loaded with bias. Socratic believes that facts should be the basis of a rating, not emotion.
