Work load was at times unbalanced. Had less homework throughout some of high school. People who are different are more prone to get bullied here. They don't always receive the support they need. I was bullied while attending this school. Teachers and staff knew and did nothing.

We spent one year in the preschool program at FXW, following two years at an exceptional preschool. Early childhood challenges dealt with in stride, without drama, by enlightened and supportive teachers were elevated to major issues at FXW and the we do things one way approach seemed only to exacerbate any problems. As educated professionals, we found teachers and administration consistently (and oddly) imperious, and communications with them to be generally inauthentic. We struggled throughout the year to appreciate the reputation that the school continues to enjoy (garnered years ago when it was undoubtedly deserved), but honestly never did on any level. A disturbing exercise of discretion/judgment by the teachers made our decision not to re-enroll our children at the school an inexorable one. Strongly encourage you to talk with a number of different families about recent experiences before determining that this is the best school for your child.

Make no mistake, this school is struggling. The administration has created a discriminatory and divisive culture among teachers and staff. People are fearful of having open conversations for fear of retaliation. The "DEI" curriculum is a joke. The school celebrates diversity by recruiting families like ours (Latino) but our experience has been a huge disappointment. These people are so "woke" that they are completely lost in their own fog.
Position, Company name
Please do your due diligence and talk to the existing and former families at NNMS before you enroll your child. The school has lost almost all 3-6 teachers along with a few 6-9 teachers this year, and these teachers were there for decades. The administration and board failed miserably in taking actions and addressing these issues.

Run! Sacred Heart on Sheridan Rd has zero support for children who learn differently and their answer to advanced students is one page of enrichment. Boys and girls are treated very differently with the best teachers supporting Hardy Prep. We were underwhelmed with the quality of teachers for our daughter and shocked by the lack of support academically, socially and emotionally. Top dollar donors receive a blind eye towards their obnoxious and less academically sound students. There is a huge bullying problem not only with the children but adults as well, for the amount of money and emotional turmoil you will experience I would toss your dollars anywhere but here.

The school's main priority is to make the world a better place by educating the leaders of the future. They should be empathetic activists that are open minded and tolerant specifically to the ideas that the school teaches them. There is no formal reading and writing until 1st grade. Every kinder teacher implements some sort of writing workshop according to their preferences. But most are minimal. Even in 1st grade, the teachers spend very little time on academics. Eventually most students learn math and reading from after school tutoring. They discuss current events in class. They organize demonstrations with the children as early as in nursery 3. They invite all the children in kindergarten to consider choosing a different gender. Systemic racism is a daily topic of conversation. They teach them to read books and appreciate art from authors of color exclusively. The school was much better not long ago.

A school should inspire curiosity & thirst for learning. Latin has turned into an institution that tells students what to think, not how to think. It’s wrong to hear students say they know when to "keep their mouths shut" because of teachers' differing views. Biased teaching is not preparing students for the real world, rather it strips them of freedom of thought, weakening their real world perspective. The administration, including Head of School continues to ignore bullying that exists across all divisions within the student, faculty & parent bodies. I feel my children are targeted for who they are and do not feel they are fully safe. Members of the community feel they can't truly be themselves without being unfairly treated. This is only underscored by allowing biased organizations to script curriculum. If you are looking at Latin, seriously consider another as this school's academic legacy appears to be slipping quickly.

Teachers keep this place together. Jewish education is decent. Secular education so-so. Administration and board are a mess and need a complete overhaul. Strong diversity.

Teachers are very warm and caring. Head of school is terrible. Will not send my child back. Make sure they put any promises in writing if you choose to send your child here.

I graduated from City Day 4 years ago, so this review may be outdated, but it seems that the school has really gone downhill. To start, City Day wasn't as amazing as it should have been for its price. The curriculum and teachers were wonderful and prepared me well for high school- I went to a school that was recently rated as the top school in the state of California and graduated with honors and Cum Laude- but everything else needed improvement. Extracurriculars were quite lacking- sports were weak and there were no clubs at the school, the diversity in the students was zero- everyone was the same somewhat stuck-up, well-to-do white kid, and there was no tolerance for difference among the students, parents, or faculty/admin. Now, from what I've heard, the academics aren't even good anymore, making it hard to understand why anyone would pay so much to have a child attend a school whose only good quality has now gone. My advice? Don't waste your money here.

The Philosophy of Sacred Heart is nice, but unfortunately it doesn't get across to most students. There was a very big bullying problem in my grade, and when people would bring it to the teachers or administration, they did nothing. The academics there are strong, and they have a fair amount of club and teams (athletic and non-athletic). One thing they do claim is to have a economically, religiously, and culturally diverse student body, and that is true, but there definitely was a divide between the wealthy and everyone else. The quality of the teachers at the school is about 25% poor and 75% good. The middle school teachers do a good job preparing you for high school. Overall, I would suggest sending your children here if they generally fit in, and if you are wealthy, otherwise, steer clear.

My children attended BZAEDS years ago. It was challenging. If your kid is unconventional in any way it's not the school for you. If your kid needed a little help in, say, math, the classroom teacher was not available to provide extra support. You were asked to seek outside tutoring--usually from another teacher at the school to the tune of $100-$150 per hour. This was never done at the other private and public schools my kids attended. So much time was spent on non academic activities kids, even in the youngest grades, often had hours of homework. Things may have improved since then, there has been serious turnover.

This was a fantastic school for three generations, but lost its way. Two new heads of school in a row (the first was nice, but not effective) and the second (who cares more about radical left wing politics than Judaism) have combined to make it a very different place than it was even 5 years ago. Be warned.

If you have received financial aid from Latin, please be aware that the aid package we received turned out to be a sham. Although we received a generous aid package during our first year, our financial obligation increased significantly every year, and we ended up paying almost the entire tuition fee for multiple children. While Latin claims to consider the entire family's finances, and we also expected some increase due to our rising income, the decision to increase our financial obligation this much did not make sense at all. This eventually forced us to withdraw our children from the school, even though they still wanted to attend. It was an extremely painful experience for our entire family, and we are not sure if there have been any policy changes over time or if we were singled out and treated unfairly.

When you're inside the Latin School of Chicago, you'll feel like you're in a special place, and maybe you'll find a way for yourself there as a student or teacher. There are times you will enjoy the experience. When it's all over, though, you will look back and realize that the Latin School of Chicago hollowed you out and filled you up with something dense and immovable, something that weighed you down so you could never move the way you wanted to. You'll realize you are not the same as you used to be, and not in a good way.

I am an alum who attended middle school and high school. The overall quality of my education was solid and I was prepared academically for both college and grad school. I was destroyed there emotionally though. The teachers and administrators will cut you down and chip away at your self esteem at every opportunity and the students (esp the lifers) are ruthless (even to a “popular” child such as myself). There are issues with drugs, racism, anti semitism and classism. The people who buy their incredible prestige PR should look deeper at their own motivation for choosing this school and think twice before subjecting their child to such abuse...there are far better options if you have or want an educated, kind and happy child.

There is not enough emphasis on education. It's all social-emotional. For example, the preschoolers, some of whom are 5 years old, are learning just 1 letter a week. The e-learning during the pandemic was terrible. School was completely not prepared. We had 10 min a day 4 days a week of teacher time in groups of 3. For a school that boasts such small classroom sizes, it was a complete and utter disappointment. It does however have a great location and a wonderful art teacher.
Position, Company name
We thought the school was a good school. However, the parent interview was a complete waste of our time. We knew from the very start of the interview that we were not being considered for admission. That is completely unprofessional and shows poor administration staff. We did not have a unique experience. Comparing notes with another applicant family showed the same ill treatment and lack of a "real" interview. It was a scam to collect application fees. This school already knows who they are going to admit way before the application process is complete.

Sacred Heart is a great academic institution. The environment is uplifting. The downside is lack of diversity and inclusion.

The kids are not always nice. Very wealthy school. It is part of a network which is unique.

It isn't a bad school, especially in lower school, but I just don't think its a great school, especially in middle school. As a middle school student I notice that many of the teachers are not as good in their subjects as I would expect and my peers know it and can feel bored. Some even barely ahead of the students. Sometimes the teachers are even corrected. Many projects also drop out of the blue and side track our classes. The tech is cool, but a lot of it is not put to its full potential. The administration was just changed, and I haven't really got the full feel of them yet, but I don't think it will have much of an effect. Over all, its not a bad school, but there are many places nearby that I think look better.

Lab has an abundance of resources and a huge emphasis on academics, however they would do well to let other areas of study such as arts and music shine. In addition, the academic drive of the school, although it pushes students to be hugely successful, can take a large toll on students causing many to lose out on sleep, food, and sound mental health. Lab has many great faculty members who are both highly knowledgeable and care deeply about students. However, the school's administration is rocky and doesn't show as much support for their faculty as they should. This is especially true for members of the school from underrepresented backgrounds (especially BIPOC and LGBTQ+ members), causing many to feel that they have no choice but to leave. Overall, students who can handle the heavy grind of Lab's workload and not be hindered by its questionable values may go on to be highly successful post-grad given Lab's rigorous training, but others may fall behind or even be forced to leave.
Position, Company name
The University of Chicago Laboratory schools gives students many amazing resources and opportunities. The facilities are excellent in each department that provide for a resource rich learning environment. There are also great larger opportunities like taking classes at the University of Chicago during your high school years. Or going on exchange programs to Germany, France, Greece, ext. however the environment at Lab is not the best. It is very competitive, in a toxic way especially when it comes to college. There is lots of pressure to do exceedingly well and when your best is not an A there is a certain stigma around anything less than an A grade.

I've spent my entire life at Parker, and it has improved a lot since I was little. It went from a semi-problematic school in regard to racism and overall equity, but as I grew up it became more inclusive and aware of diverse students' experiences. However, I did get sick of it when I started getting old enough to realize it wasn't suitable for me. It is a predominantly white school, and as a multiracial student, it was hard to be 100% myself. I've been on the shy side most of the time I've been there. I've become comfortable in the environment and love my friends there.
Position, Company name
Small class sizes, teachers are very open and understanding, and the school as a whole tries to progressive. Parker has many traditions and customs, making the community as a whole very close and involved. When it comes to preparing students for college and the college process, the small student body makes it possible for counselors to work one-on-one with families and students. Parker students are definitely fortunate to have the people and resources to assist in every step of the way. That being said though, the school, despite talks of wanting to improve in terms of inclusion and diversity, is not great about including all voices, opinions, and perspectives in the student body.
Position, Company name
I'm a 14 year alumnus of Parker with a child in school today. Parker has lost much of the magic from prior generations. Today, it is little more than a rich-kid school, with huge administrative staff and no economic diversity. No longer a "complete" community, it is merely an "elite" community. In addition to having no economic diversity, Park has little political diversity, and administration is unresponsive to the progressive indoctrination that occurs in some classrooms. Perhaps some of the teachers confuse the "progressive educational movement" with the "progressive political movement." Parker still offers opportunities for a great education, but overall Parker is no longer the magical place it once was - just an expensive private school.
Position, Company name
My experience has been good, not great. Despite the school claiming to be community oriented and diverse, it is actually pretty homogenous and many students are competitive. Girls are cliquey and stuck-up while boys are disrespectful and loud. Nearly every high schooler drinks, and many do drugs. It is extremely difficult to get in trouble, adding to the feelings of entitlement among the student body. The humanities programs are really strong for the most part, with great teachers and courses. However, the STEM programs are weak in comparison to Parker's peer institutions. Lower Schoolers hardly learn any math, and some of the Upper School math and science teachers don't seem to care about their students. This causes many students to require tutoring. Some of the administrators seem to be more focused on marketing than what actually goes on in the school. Parker has its fair share of smart students, but it also has students who are lazy and don't seem to care about their education. The work load isn't too bad up until junior year, when it suddenly becomes unbearable for many students due to lack of preparation. One of Parker's greatest assets is its small class sizes, but the fact that it is a JK-12 school means that many students base their perceptions of their classmates off of what they were like in lower school.
Position, Company name
The Lab School is a great place. My children are happy. The only challenge is the culture has gradually shifted due to the turnover of School Directors / Head of Schools. The school is run by teachers which is both a positive and negative. The admin supports the teachers and the director typically supports the principals of each division or school. It makes it hard to escalate a challenge so parents learn to simple work things out with their child's teacher. Which again, is a plus and minus at the same time.

At Francis W. Parker , the focus on student-centered learning has been great for me. Teachers tap into our interests, promoting critical thinking and creative freedom. The diverse community has broadened my perspective, and the extracurriculars have helped me discover new passions/interests.
Position, Company name
As a former black student at Parker, I’ll try an give as unbiased a review as possible. My experience was from 7th grade until sophomore year between the years of 2002-2006. I was fortunate enough to have had the experience of going to a public, private, military, and reform school, so I believe I can say with some accuracy, which school gave me the best education, best connections, and best overall experience, and that was Parker. The access, the small class sizes, the teachers, and the curriculum are all stellar. You essentially get what you pay for as most students who graduate are well rounded, well adjusted, and are given the tools to think critically and contextualize most, if not all situations. With that being said, Parker has always had, and will probably always have an issue garnering more POC and black students into its community. This has mainly to do with the cost of tuition. Ultimately, even with this being the case, Parker is worth it and will give your child a leg up.

I have two children at FXW and simply cannot say enough positive things about it. The core values at FXW (Purposely Diverse, Intentionally Inclusive) are exhibited every day from the dedicated and caring professionals. FXW is innovative, forward thinking and responsive. Professional development is noticeably encouraged as the educators are constantly bringing in new ideas to challenge and expand the horizons of our children. The educators at FXW make it a top priority to create a sense of camaraderie among the students leading to a more positive environment with something for everyone. When the COVID-19 pandemic created a massive shift in the way we all live our lives, FXW was at the forefront of transitioning each family to distance learning and they have been extremely willing to adapt and adjust based on the needs of the students and the parents. Needless to say, I’m proud to be a FXW parent!

School is in a perfect location in downtown and is strong in academics but also has early focus on teaching kids to be good people. can't be more proud of our current 2nd gr and kindergartener. our kids absolutely love going to school. the teachers so so responsive and go out of there way to make sure parents are supported and their questions are addressed ASAP. the school does distinguish itself by the diversity reflective of the city location. great safety and kids are watching constantly, in a good way.

Our son is in his second year at CJDS in Kindergarten and we are overjoyed with the school as it fosters his imagination, curiosity and creativity. We are thrilled to have found a Jewish day school that not only challenges him to grow and learn intellectually, but enriches his Jewish identity in an open and engaging environment. We are impressed with the curriculum which is directed by student interests and seamlessly weaves Jewish learning, and Hebrew into each subject. Our son incorporates his Jewish learning into his play, even inspiring his younger brothers by sharing stories he learned at school about the Maccabees and playing Maccabees hiding in caves. We are most excited about the CJDS community, it's not just a school for our children to grow, but a rich environment where we support other families by building connections, and helping one another. We greatly value the immense impact CJDS has had on our family.
Position, Company name
I have 3 kids at CJDS and have been continuously impressed at the approach and thoughtfulness of the teachers, staff, and head of school. This really is a place that lives by their philosophy to treat the "whole child", and I'm confident that my kids will turn out to be better people because of CJDS.

NNM is an absolutely amazing place. We have been parents at the school for 6+ years and are astounded by the quality and talent of the faculty at every level. The school and the Montessori philosophy foster creativity, hard work, self-motivation, and empathy in our children and we feel so lucky to be able to send them there. Kids in the upper levels have the opportunity to be entrepreneurs and run a food delivery business serving lunch to the rest of the school and the high school and college matriculations are extremely impressive. More importantly, the school teaches kindness and curiosity and the current students and alums are talented and wonderful in such a wide range of ways, but all generous, thoughtful, considerate, and diligent.
Position, Company name
Best school ever! It is not only an amazing place to learn but it is also such a special community. And the community embraces learning and joy. We are so grateful to all the educators and teachers that cone eaxh day bringing their best hardworking selves.

We've been delighted with the the programming and the culture at Chicago City Day School. The teachers are friendly and compassionate, but they hold students to high standards, as well. The campus includes a nice variety of indoor and outdoor spaces. And we love the different travel experiences offered in the later grades. City Day did an outstanding job this year staying open and making sure kids were learning during the pandemic. We couldn't be happier with City Day.
Position, Company name
My son has been a student at City Day for 9 years and I have seen great growth both academically as well as emotionally. The smaller class sizes and core academic groups have really made a difference in his learning. The teachers all know him very well and can cater to his individual needs.

We have been at Sacred Heart for nine years now and we could not be happier with the impact the school has had on our children! They have not only learned the subjects but have also benefitted from the development of the whole child that Sacred Heart offers, which has allowed them to grow into true "Hardey gentlemen." The focus on the Sacred Heart goals & criteria (faith in God, respect for intellectual values, social awareness/action, building of community, and growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom) is apparent. We are so grateful to have Sacred Heart as a partner in our children's development!
Position, Company name
We have two children at Sacred Heart and feel so lucky to have found this school. The teachers really educate the whole child, and understand what each student needs. Academics are challenging and rigorous, preparing kids for the top high schools in the city. Same-sex education and small class sizes help create an environment that is focused and nearly free of distractions. There is a huge number of clubs, activities and sports to choose from. I also appreciate that while the school is Catholic, it's pretty progressive and very inclusive -- students (whose families have a ton of different backgrounds) learn about world religions from both an academic and cultural perspective. One thing that makes Sacred Heart special is the focus on service and civic education, which is a huge part of daily life and the school community.

As a parent of two little ones, I can't express what a relief it is that my kids love to go to school. Catherine Cook does a great job at keeping the activities and days exciting. My kids are learning so much and are doing so in fun ways. The teachers care so much and make sure everyone feels like they belong and are safe. We chose it for its strong academics while also building strong character and are glad we did.
Position, Company name
I am a parent of 2 children- currently in grades 2 and 4- as we've been at Catherine Cook since they were both in Pre-K. There has not been a day that my children have not been delighted to go to school. They feel supported and known by not only their teachers- but every administrator, security guard, building and grounds professional, and cafeteria associate. CCS is truly a special place for children to learn and realize their interests, talents, and potential. I feel confident CCS is helping them develop the skills and mindset they need to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally in high school and beyond.

I can't imagine being anywhere else. BZ has been such a welcoming community where teachers care so deeply about their students, where families help each other out, and where students become wonderful humans. The school has supported my student in all avenues of his education and are always open to find ways to be even better. I love being here!
Position, Company name
BZ is a great school. Our children are happy to go to school every day. The teachers are so warm and know our children so well. The class sizes allow for excellent differentiation. The music and athletic programs are top notch ( athletics in the middle school are taken very seriously but kids are supportive of one another and the majority of kids join the teams regardless of athletic ability). Strong math, science, writing and humanities. Lots of performance opportunities. Kids leave having played a band instrument of their choice, guitar and have choir and have stage performance/ drama experience. Great trips in the middle school - retreats, a week in Washington DC , 2 full weeks in Israel . Kids from here end up at the most selective high schools and do well once there. Some students will leave as fluent Hebrew speakers and others not as much but all will leave with a strong Jewish identify and know how to be a Jew in a non Jewish world. Highly observant families may not be a fit

Lab is an amazing school and learning opportunity for students. We are so pleased to have connection with teachers who not only excel in their subjects but love teaching and are supportive in their students success.

I came to Latin after I graduated 8th grade for high school. I came during covid into a new foreign environment with only one friend from my middle school joining me. My middle school was extremely diverse, so moving into this new environment was definitely hard. I did not make that many meaningful connections until my Sophomore year because everything was online and virtual my Freshman year. I connected with people through sports such as Basketball and Baseball. Also using clubs and affinity groups to adapt helped as well. Sophomore was my first time being back in a class environment in two years at that point. I made friends extremely quickly and had a blast. The classes I took significantly added to my experience and I have enjoyed them so much. My Junior and first semester of Senior year were filled with a lot of college preparation as the difficulty of the classes only became higher. All in all, I have loved every moment of my experience at Latin. I would change nothing.

Find answers to frequently asked questions to help you navigate our site and understand our school ratings.
You can use our search feature to locate a specific school by name. You can also search by location to view our ranked list of schools in that particular area. By searching in this way you will view the schools in descending rank from best to worst.
Socratic’s rating system has two parts: an overall rating out of 5 and individual category ratings out of 10. Using a 1-10 scale for individual categories allows for more nuance and flexibility in rating and makes the 5 star rating a more complete rating. Once individual category ratings are determined the school receives a score out of a possible 50 points which is then divided by 10 to determine their overall rating.
These individual categories and their criteria are as follows:
Financial Health: Socratic assigns a rating based on the financial information in a school’s tax returns. A tax return clearly illustrates the school’s reliance upon fundraising and donors, their involvement with outside businesses via investing, as well as their fiscal responsibility. Socratic believes this information is closely linked to how a school operates culturally as well as how decisions are made that can effect students’ and parents’ experiences at the school. We look at this information because it can help answer the question: Who does the school value?
Leadership: This rating is based upon the current head of the school’s length of tenure and number of years overall in a leadership position in education. Additionally complaints, investigations and/or lawsuits involving either the school or leader themselves both at their current school as well as at former schools while they were in charge are taken into consideration.
Lawsuits and Complaints: When determining this rating Socratic uses court records searches and news sources to determine if there have been any lawsuits and/or complaints brought against the school or its leadership.
School Culture: Socratic bases this rating upon whether the stated culture/mission statement of the school is adhered to. This is determined by referring to the lawsuits and complaints section as well as all available journalism referencing the perceptions of the school and whether these align with how the school presents itself.
Acceptance Rates at Top Colleges: College acceptance information is reported and available on most school websites. Socratic takes the number of Ivy League Acceptances and the size of the senior graduating class and determines the percentage of Ivy acceptance to determine this rating. . When unreported or in the case of elementary and middle school education this is not taken into consideration when rating the school.
Socratic uses a synthesis of pure data to determine ratings for each school. Our ratings are not crowd-sourced so cannot be review-bombed or gamified to manipulate results. Although you can view user-submitted comments and reviews of schools we do not use this information to determine our rating or the rank of the school.
Because our ratings are data-driven and carefully determined using bias-free research we believe they are more reliable than sites where ratings are determined by reviews of interested parties. Face it, no one bothers to review something unless they feel very strongly about it. These types of ratings are loaded with bias. Socratic believes that facts should be the basis of a rating, not emotion.
